Australians targeted by a heavily criticised campaign to retrieve old tax debts may get a reprieve after the federal government opened the door for the historical debts to be put on ice, according to reforms disclosed in the budget.
Budget papers show the government will amend laws to allow the commissioner of taxation discretion to not use a taxpayer’s refund to offset old tax debts put on hold before 2017.
