Kwasi Kwarteng’s future as chancellor was in peril as government sources suggested splits with Liz Truss over the scale of the U-turn on parts of her disastrous mini-budget.

Whitehall insiders told the Guardian the pair had different views on how far the government should go in reversing key elements of its plan to steady the markets and placate anxious Conservative MPs.
