About 2,200 people living on Norfolk Island are battening down as a tropical cyclone with destructive winds of more 165km/h is expected to approach the Australian territory this weekend.
The storm is about 870km north-west of Mackay, with sustained winds of 65km/h, and meteorologists expect it to strengthen to a category one cyclone on Wednesday afternoon before intensifying into a category three system several hours later.
