Watt says there is also concern for northern Western Australia seeing this unprecedented inundation at this time of the year as the wet season proper does not begin until later in January:

A lot of people aren’t aware but the wet season in northern Western Australia, it generally doesn’t begin until later this month. So their wettest months actually tend to be February and March rather than starting as early as January. So to have this amount of water come through the system this early in the wet season is a concern.

To see [Fitzroy Crossing] … which is the main freight route, not just into that community, but really across northern Australia. If you see that bridge from above, it looks like one of those bridges that has had a big bomb dropped on it, it’s just collapsed. And there’s been similarly severe damage to connecting roads.

So at this point in time, the only way of getting food, medical supplies and other essentials into these communities is by air. And that’s why we’ve dispatched a number of ADF aircraft.
