With at least 3 deaths after storm triggers disaster on island, residents say risks of unregulated construction have been ignored
As rescuers continued their relentless search on Sunday morning for 11 people still missing after a catastrophic landslide in Ischia, anger was growing on the southern Italian island over the years of rampant illegal construction that contributed to the disaster.
The landslide, which struck a day before, triggered by a violent storm that sent mud and debris from Monte Epomeo, a 789-metre peak, crashing into the hamlet of Casamicciola Terme, was by Sunday afternoon confirmed to have claimed three lives – 32-year-old Eleonora Sirabella, and a child and a woman who have yet to be officially identified.
